๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Can I get a Lyonnais Sunrise?

And we arrived in Lyon!

We had a bit of a blog hiatus, as these things happen. I hope you werenโ€™t all waiting at the edge of those proverbial seats and if so, I hope you ended up sitting back, getting more comfortable, maybe grabbed some popcorn and tucked in for a year-long wait.

I wonโ€™t get into the apartment hunt, the steamy summer, an autumn spent back and forth to the US nor our first apartment guests quite yet, but it seemed fitting that just as we left Paris with a few sunset shots, we introduce Lyon with a sunrise we enjoyed a few weeks ago.

Lyon has a great big hill to the west called Fourviรจre which isnโ€™t ideal for enjoying sunsets from our side of the rivers, but has proven the perfect perch from which to enjoy sunrises. We took advantage of a clear and late morning (sunrise ETA 7:58am) to head to Fourviรจre and wait for the sun.

First, a little early-morning funicular selfie.

Then cross the Fourviรจre Basilica plaza, coffee thermos in hand, to get to the overlook.

We had the good fortune of a double sunrise, the first a vibrant red, that peaked through a break in the low clouds.

The next, a buttery yellow sunrise that tried to be as warm as it looked.

Though weโ€™ve been up Fourviรจre dozens of times, weโ€™ve never been in the winter and certainly not at sunrise. We delighted some new sights; I was particularly mesmerized by all the wisps of smoke that danced from the chimneys below.

Croix-Rousse is a charming neighborhood on the neighboring hill. It was curious to see the fog rise from the Rhรดne River, swallowing part of Croix-Rousse completely.

The skyscrapers in the background are nicknamed โ€œThe Pencilโ€ and โ€œThe Eraserโ€ (Iโ€™ll let you guess which is which) — we live just four blocks in front of The Eraser. The skyscraper in the foreground is known as โ€œour thermosโ€ and was so effective, we had to leave the top off for the coffee to cool down enough to drink.

By this point, all extremities were the color of our noses, and it was time to go home and break fast.

Good morning Lyon!

  1. Mi Missi and Julien, You lead such an exciting life.
Thank you for sharing your experiences.
We keep traveling vicariously through you and sometimes feel we are there with you.
From our house in Big Creek we never see sunrises from the house. I have walked up the hill and have been able to admire them. But it requires the a bit of a walk.
I particularly enjoy the photograph of the city and how the metal parts of the buildings shine like gold.
The colors of the picture of both of you look like it would be warm, but I am sure it was cool.
The question you asked about the skyscraper the one on the left is the eraser and the one on the right the pencil.
It took me back when I was a child when I needed to erase my work multiple times to make it clean. Being left handed I went over my work and it never looked quite clean.
